Spanish education system

English state Education System

Child Education

Structure: two cycles of three academic education each, which are called:
§ First stage (0-3 years)
§ Second stage (3-6 years).
Pre-School.

·         Creche, to look after babies.
·         Play School (approx. 1-2 years old)
·         Kindergarten, Nursery School (approx. 2-3 years old)

Basic Education

Education or basic education is, in Spain, compulsory and free for everyone. It develops over 10 academic courses, in principle, correspond to the stage from 6 to 16; these courses are divided into two sections: primary and secondary education compulsory.
Compulsory Education.

·         Primary School (7 years)
·         Reception: 4-5 years old
·         Year  1: 5-6 years old .
·         Year  2: 6-7 years old (SATS, Scholastic Aptitude Test.)
·         Year  3: 7-8 years old
·         Year 4: 8-9 years old.
·         Year 5: 9-10 years old.
·         Year  6: 10-11 years old (SATS)

Primary

Elementary education shall consist of six academic years, from six to twelve years of age.The purpose of this level will provide all children with a common education that makes possible the acquisition of the basic cultural, learning on the oral expression, reading, writing and arithmetic, as well as a progressive autonomy of action in their environment.
Structure: three cycles of two years each:

§ Initial cycle (6-8 years)
§ Primary 1,
§ 2 nd Primary
§ half cycle (8-10 years)
§ 3 rd Primary
§ 4 th Primary
§ Upper cycle (10-12 years)
§ 5 th Primary
§ 6 th Primary

Secondary School.

-       Comprehensive, all-inclusive.
-       Grammar is selective.
-       Middle School:
·           year 5 - year 8. Only exists in some areas, very few left.
·         Year 7: 11-12 years old.
·         Year 8: 12-13 years old.
·         Year 9: 13-14 years old (SATS).
·         Year  10: 14-15 years old.
·         Year  11: 15-16 years old (GCSEs, General Certificate of Secondary Education)
Compulsory secondary education.

Structure: two cycles of two academic years each:

§ First Cycle (12-14 years (if not repeat course))
§ 1 º E.S.O.
§ 2 º E.S.O.
§ Second Cycle (14-16 years old (if not repeat course))
§ 3 º E.S.O.
§ 4 ° E.S.O.


After finishing ESO the student has several options:

1- Extend the intermediate level training courses.
2- Access to the Baccalaureate.
3- Joining the world of work (has reached the minimum age for access).
Higher education (non-Compulsory)

Sixth Form:
·         Year 12 (or Lower Sixth)  16-17 years old.
·         Year 13 (or Upper Sixth)  17-18 years old.

Baccalaureate

Structure: a cycle consists of two academic years (16-18 years):

§ Bachelor 1,
§ Bachelor 2 º
§ Bachelor of structure divided into types:
§ Old system modes:
§ Arts (two way)
§ Natural Sciences and health
§ Humanities and Social Sciences
§ Science and Technology
§ New system (introduced during 2008/2009) BOE.
§ Arts (Graphic arts, or performing arts, music and dance)
§ Science and Technology
§ Humanities and Social Sciences

University.

Typically 3 years courses. Languages; 4 years, Teaching; 4 years, Medicine; 5 years and continued training after qualifying, Architecture; 6-7 years.
